Kestrel. In Lydney cricket ground.

The Kestrel was a juvenile. I think it let me close enough to take this photograph, about 10 meters. It hung about for 4 days and then it was gone. Shame, but I got a load of films.

Cormorant pictured at Lydney Boating Lake.

The Cormorant, what a big bird, quite a beautiful sight. Some people seemed it alright to kill them, it is after the fish and no doubt will frighten the fishermen. I think that they can live together without any harm. So, there will always be plenty of fish.

Bar-headed Goose

A Bar-headed Goose is hard to find at Lydney boating lake, in fact, it's hard to find outside of the Himalayas. This one must have flown here from Slimbridge (an escapee). It is a really high flyer, the highest known of all birds.

The Coal Tit lives in the trees, mostly coniferous. It eats insects and seeds. In the winter it is commonly seen in gardens, when it takes away seeds from the feeders and will go and hide it.

Long-tailed Tit

Long-tailed Tits are gently noisy. They move from tree to tree looking for food, insects, lichen and green algae. They are sociable, and huddle up when they are cold and to fall sleep.

The Chaffinch. At Cannop Ponds

The Chaffinch seems to be always eating food, it is in peoples gardens readily filled with well stocked bird seeds, either from the table or on the ground. They can be the most striking birds that you can see, especially in their plumage.

Barrow's Goldeneye. Photographed at Slimbridge WWT. Thanks to the WWT

The Barrow's Goldeneye is a medium-sized diving duck. They have a yellow eye, a steeply sloped forehead with flatter crown and peak at forward part of crown. They have a small, stubby bill.
The bill of the female Common Goldeneye is larger and mostly black with a yellow tip, while the Barrow's bill is smaller and mostly yellow. Male Barrow's Goldeneyes have iridescent purple heads that look black when not in the sun, and prominent, crescent-shaped white spots on each side of the head at the base of the bill.

Buzzard

The Buzzards are regularly killed, mostly by gamekeepers who try to look after their "well stocked" with Pheasants and Partridges. Let us leave them alone, and not let them take a barrage of gunfire. The Buzzard is the most beautiful of birds and takes rabbits, which is usual. Killing of rabbits, through myxomatosis is still alive, and it touches the Buzzard.

Moorhen

Moorhen are quite a remarkable birds, they can climb up trees, run on the ground, swim and running through the undergrowth. They don't have webbed feet but toes. They can brood from 2 or 3 times each year. They eat nearly everything, grasses, seeds, water weeds, insects, worms and fruit.

Green Woodpecker

Ah, the Green Woodpecker noise, its call is a yaffle sound. Sometimes you can hear it but it’s too hard to see. What the bird eats is a mixture of ants and their pupae.

Blackbird.

Blackbirds sings every morning, even before the day begins. At night, it is the last to stop singing. It doesn't give one a moment peace. Actually, I think it's the most pleasant noise you can ever hear.

Bewick's Swan taken at Slimbridge WWT

There was a lot of rain recently, and Lydney was almost flooded, so I put in this Bewick's Swan. It looked so majestic as it was looking for food.
